Victoria Miniatures have added Victorian Laser Rifles and seperate arms to the parts available from their shop.

Intended mainly as Praetorian Imperial Guard for Warhammer 40K, you can now assemble infantry as well as the previously released cavalry.
Examples of some different assembly ideas are shown below.

Very useful as colonial British infantry for VSF, alongside the cavalry, kilted infantry with pith helmets are now also an option.

Blight Wheel Victorian Robot

Over on the Lead Adventure Forum, Mancha has been asking for ideas for a robot to compliment the Hinterland range of lady soldiers, and posted a picture of this robot from Blight Wheel Miniatures.

I like this robot a lot, particularly the head, with it's single eye, and I fancy I shall be picking up at least one in the new year.
I can't explain why, but he looks British to me. It must be the head, the top of which looks like a cross between a bowler hat and a Tommy's tin helmet.

I received someHinterland figures in the post yesterday, and found myself admiringthe Medics pack.

It contains a rathernice dog, which I found myself admiring, and comparing to the otherdog models I have.

It was then itdawned on me what a lot of dog miniatures I have.

My Inquisition agentfor Dark Heresy has a dog, my officer from my old 40K Imperial Guardarmy has a pack of dogs (rather nice huskies from Copplestone).Canine companions seem to have featured in most of my oldrole-playing parties (we used miniatures for combat to save argumentsover movement etc.). I have over 30 dog miniatures from variousmanufacturers. Big dogs, small dogs, even chaos hounds (and lets noteven start on the number of wolves I have)

My VSF QueensElectrical Rifles have a regimental mascot that's a goat, but that'sa different story..

Now that I think aboutit, I seem to collect more livestock generally than is absolutelynecessary (donkeys, mules, cattle etc), as most of my forces havesome kind of baggage element, although none of the rulesets I userequire them.

So, I now realise Iseem to have a bit of a miniature animal obsession, with the emphasison dogs, :?

I'm not particularly adog lover. I don't have one, and haven't had one since I was a kid.

So why my miniature dogobsession?

Apparently, Lancers are like buses - nothing for ages then 2 releases come along at once !
These Anglo Zulu War Lancers from Empress Miniatures, sculpted by Paul Hicks, are so dynamically posed, its impossible to resist. They certainly convey the impression that they are indeed charging, and I already own some of the fine Empress AZW British infantry.
I think that these are mounted on Ebob horses
Another unit it is then. And I do believe that Mr Hicks is fast becoming my favourite sculptor.

VICTORIA MNIATURES HAVE ARRIVED

Well, the good news is that my order from Victoria Miniatures arrived today.
8 days from Australia to the UK isn't bad at all. The parcel made it unscathed through Customs too, which is nice.

The parts themselves are beautifully crisply detailed, with only a little flash. Definitely even better in the flesh than they look in the photos. I'm delighted with these.
The bad news is that I forgot to update the amount of torsos I ordered at check out, so I only have one sprue of 3. I ordered enough legs, arms and heads to assemble a squad of 10, with a few bits left over. Ah well, I was going to order some of the kilted legs anyway, so I can assemble 3 Rough Riders while I wait for my second order to arrive.
I plan on using the kilted legs with the Rough Rider torsos and the soon-to-be-released Victorian Laser Rifles along with a mix of pith helmet and balmoral cap heads to make some VSF Highlanders.
Victoria Miniatures also plan to release a bagpiper, and eventually a command set, which should set this unit off nicely.

NEW HINTERLAND LADIES

Hinterland Miniatures have just released the latest expansion to their Victorian ladies in uniform range.

Mancha started this range with one figure based on Princess Viktoria-Luise of Germany, the Colonel-in-Chief in the 2nd Leib Hussaren regiment, sculpted by the very talented Paul Hicks.

She proved so popular that Hinterland then moved on to produce "a fictitious unit of female Hussars, serving at the end of the 19th Century, up to World War One".

The Hussar range now includes this Firing Line pack, and Unit Builder pack (above), and Hinterland have added a Princess Viktoria mounted figure, Command pack, Skirmishers pack, a Maxim and crew, and even a pack of zombies.

Hinterland also offer Princess Cecilie (below) and her Trench Raiders

Just released are the Sailors, rifle-armed Cavalry and Medics, again mostly sculpted by Paul Hicks,

(one of the medics is co-sculpted by eBob, as are the horses)
The next set of releases will apparently include an open-handed cavalrywoman, and another set of Trench Raiders, armed with rifles.

HINTERLAND FEMALE HUSSARS

Unbelievably, I've almost finished my first unit of Hinterland female hussars!

I only need to finish the bases and then I can take some photos and post them here, finally. Yes, I am very slow.

I painted a pair of these lovely figures ages ago, and I've already got a second squad and a few extras in the painting queue, including Princess Viktoria mounted, Princess Cecilie, a command pack and a maxim crew.

I really need to knuckle down!

Anyway, I'll take any excuse to show pictures from this wonderful range, so here are the latest releases from Hinterland Miniatures, better late than never.

SARISSA PRECISION BUILDINGS

Just found these beautiful laser-cut buildings from Sarissa Precision. Lots more are shown, labelled as WWII, although I think they could be very useful for a Victorian setting.

They already offer a fine range of Western bulidings, which come in a smaller 25mm size and "heroic" 28mm size. The new WWII buildings though will be available in 15mm and 28mm sizes. Based on the Western builings they produce, prices seem very reasonable too.

These look very, very promising.

I already have some laser-cut buildings from Warbases (which look better in the flesh than they do on their website), advertised as for A Very British Civil War (ie between WWI and WWII), which I'm very pleased with. Supplied flat-packed, they were very easy to assemble with PVA glue. I'll try and post a photo when I can get round to it.

Okay, I've been umming and aahing over ordering this figure from Leadbones for absolutely ages:-

and never quite got round to it because, well, its only one figure, and I didn't have any particular need for any other of their figures. But now thats all changed when I saw on the Lead Adventure Forum that they are soon to release these little gems:-

I've admired Overlord's Geezer set-up for ages, especially this beautiful little bit of scenery, including his fantastic Arkwright and Granville conversions:-

I even bought some of the frontages he created from Outpost Wargames Services, althought I've yet to do anything with them I'm ashamed to say.

Just placed an order for these new Fenris Games furniture items - Study Furniture Set with Grandfather Clock and a set of 2 Grand Bookcases. There are other nice items in the range too. I believe these were made originally for the Frothers 2011 Cthluedo game, but I'm going to find a use for them with the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. I have some other bits and bobs to eventually decorate a study or something similar.

Prussian scientist Baron von Frankenstein has revealed the results of his latest experiments to create the ultimate soldier. Squads of these enhanced humans have been used against forces of Her Majesty.
These brutes exhibit supernatural strength and terrifying levels of violence.

These are repainted Heroclix Hulk figures that have been added to my Prussian forces.
I plan to add a controller of some kind, who may or may not be the Baron himself, and I imagine they will be immune to morale results as long as their controller is active, running amok if the controller is killed.

A repainted Heroclix Riddler figure, very loosely based on (perhaps "inspired by" would be a better description) the character Big Ben from the Alan Moore Marvel Man universe featured in Warrior magazine a long time ago. I was attracted by the fact that his walking stick features the question mark League of Extraordinary Gentlemen logo, but my efforts to straighten the soft plastic stick proved fruitless.
Maybe I'll replace it with a piece of hard plastic if it begins to bother me too much..

I have finally managed to track down the elusive Pontoonier Gurkhas sculpted by Paul Hicks, and previously seemingly only available at shows in the US. They are now available from Newline Designs.

5 packs are available, and I like them very much. I have these 2 packs, and may well pick up the other 3 in the future. I have primed them, and hopefully wont leave it too long before I paint them and post pictures here.

ADVENTURES IN JIMLAND GAME

Here's another ruleset I became aware of through members the Lead Adventure Forum.
Despite its silly name, ADVENTURES IN JIMLAND is a great little game which can be played with a small group of players, or, rather pleasingly, solo.
Its an exploration game with a miniature game element, and a campaign game element should you wish. Sort of like Necromunda in Darkest Africa.
You outfit your expedition with Explorers, Soldiers, less reliable Askari and, of course native bearers.
You explore, with or without a rough map, and certain encounters can result in the opportunity to trade, discover new animals and plants or ancient ruins.
Not all the natives are friendly, and this is where the miniatures come in. There is a simple and fun combat system to resolve battles on the tabletop on a 30" x 30" board, with random animals joining in the fun. You can tailor the animal encounter tables to accomodate the miniatures you have in your collection.

Eventually, your expedition must make its way back to civilisation. Hopefully with a profit.

I've made some jungle scenery and an explorers camp, and painted some explorers and bearers for this game which I'll hopefully put pictures of up here once I get around to it, plus the pygmies and natives once I get those painted. Maybe even the cheap toy dinosaurs and Zanzibari slavers.

Its been a while, but I can't think of a more suitable reason for me to resume posting on this blog than the imminent release of the G.A.S.L.I.G.H.T COMPENDIUM.

This is the old rulebook I currently have, (which was quite difficult to track down) and I have been building up my forces for.

(and when I say "building up my forces", I mean buying the figures, prepping them, gluing them to bases, doing a little conversion or two occasionally, undercoating them, and slowly, very, very slowly painting them. Why is everything accomplished faster and easier than painting, which is excrutiatingly slow?*)

Anyway, the rules above are just about 1/4 of the new GASLIGHT COMPENDIUM, which will also feature updated material from the "Battles By Gaslight", "Adventures and Expeditions By Gaslight", and "To Be Continued By Gaslight" books.

I am really looking forward to this book, and hope someday that I will get some gaming use out of the Hinterland Female Hussars, Pontoonier Gurkhas, Games Workshop Praetorians, Ironclad British Infantry, Empress Zulu War Infantry, Renegade Prussian Infantry, Renegade French Infantry and Marines, Hasslefree Kindred, Copplestone Sailors, numerous Wargames Foundry Darkest Africa figures, and not forgetting the myriad of character figures from various companies that I am working on.

*To answer my own question, I think its because all the other tasks can be accomplished without my full attention, e.g. while watching TV, chatting with the kids etc., while painting requires my full attention.

These are beautiful new Steampunk miniatures produced by a Russian company, Ratnik Miniatures.
I believe these are going to be distributed in the EU, initially in resin, and eventually in metal, hopefully quite soon.

QUEENS ELECTRICAL RIFLES UPDATE

Just some updated pictures of the first squad of the Queens Electrical Rifles, armed with their experimental Effing & Blinding Mk1 rifles. These now have a little more painting done, and are almost finished, with just a little touching up, and the bases to be done. I hope to be able to finish these before the end of the week.

My photography skills aren't great, and for some reason they appear to be much more pink in these pictures than they are in real life. I assure you their jackets are a much darker red than they appear.

BRAMBLE & SON: VAMPIRE HUNTERS

I love the fantastic Jack Staff comic. I have ordered 2 miniatures from Artizan which I am hoping to paint up/convert to represent Bramble & Son: Vampire Hunters. These two characters are based on the Steptoe & Son TV comedy series of the 1960s and 70s. In the TV series they are rag & bone men, not vampire hunters, but still, the League has no current need for rag & bone men.

STEAM TANK & WALKER under construction

British steam tank I've been working on.

Obviously its a GW Chimera with a couple of modifications.

Armed with a cannon in the turret, and with an electrical rifle mounted on the front.

The turret won't be clear once its painted, which should alter the profile somewhat.

I've added a funnel, and it comes with its own self-towed ammunition, coal and water trailer for extended missions

Raiding the GW model range a bit further, here is the steam walker again.

A slightly less fuzzy photograph than previously.

It is armed with a Tesla-Vickers electro cannon.

New release from Empress Miniatures. These Hollywood versions of the Rorkes Drift "Zulu" characters are spot-on. Private Henry Hook, Chard, Bromhead and Colour Sergeant Bourne. A great fun addition to their impressive Zulu War range. Have I ordered a pack? Oh yes.
"Still, a chap ought to look smart in front of the men, don't you think?"

Empress promise a further pack with the historical versions of these characters.
"Mister Witt Sir, be quiet now, will you? There's a good gentleman. You'll upset the lads."

Yesterday my Hinterland female hussars arrived from the US. I've based them but, as it was raining, I was unable to undercoat them because I do that outside. Already ordered a second set. I plan to paint one set mainly in black for my Prussian forces, so that should be quick and easy, and the second set will be British, so red coats will probably be in order.

Finished off a couple of additions to my League characters, as you can see, so I thought I'd photograph them too.
While I had the camera out, I took a shot of my Queen's Electrical Rifles, a new elite unit equipped with the latest Tesla-Vickers experimental weapons. They're mostly GW Praetorians with a few conversions. I have about 40 altogether, so they'll be the mainstay of my British forces. The Bromhead figure I've ordered from Black Scorpion will be commanding a unit of them when he turns up. I hope to add some units of Ironclad Miniatures home service Brits, and some of the Empress Miniatures Zulu War Brits as well, eventually. Very nice figures.

Still no sign of the Renegade Miniatures WW1 Early War Germans and French, which I plan to use for my VSF Prussian and (obviously) French forces. Still, as they're on special offer at the moment and work out at about 50p a figure, I guess I can wait. Its not like I haven't got a horde of figures waiting to be painted anyway.

Black Scorpion have at last released the metal version of Lt Bromhead that was previously only available in a limited edition resin version. Very nice figure that will probably be drafted into the Queens Electrical Rifles.

QUEENS ELECTRICAL RIFLES WALKER

A slightly fuzzy picture of the steam walker for the Queens Electrical Rifles taken using my phone camera.
Its basically a GW Imperial guard sentinel, although the operator has a Wargames Factory British redcoat head. Knocked it together last night, and I quite like it. I may do another one or two.
The Queen's Electrical Rifles are, as the name suggests, equipped with experimental electrical rifles, and the walker here has the heavy electrical cannon. My QER are old GW Praetorians.

FEMALE VICTORIAN SCI-FI HUSSARS

OK, I am finally back to this blog, and it is appropriate that the first new post should be about these superb VSF female hussars from new company, Hinterland Miniatures, sculpted by Paul Hicks.

Jason Moses designed and commissioned these figures following a discussion on the Lead Adventure Forum.

"On 22 October 1909 Princess Viktoria-Luise of Germany received her commission as Colonel-in-Chief in the 2nd Leib Hussaren regiment. The miniatures above are intended to represent a fictitious unit of female Hussars, serving at the end of the 19th Century, up to World War I. Although these miniatures wear the famous Death's Head Hussar insignia on the busby, they could be painted to represent a variety of Hussar regiments."

I have ordered a set of 12 of these miniatures from the US to the UK for $34, including postage, and I can't wait for them to arrive. Quite a novel idea, and more are planned if these are successful enough, I believe.

NEW RECRUITS
Left to right: Arthur Raffles (gentleman thief), Inspector Harold Eastwood, Lieutenant Ernest Blackadder (on leave after his famous victory at Mboto Gorge), and William Constantine.

And the models (left to right) are Copplestone, Hasslefree, Musketeer, and Heresy.
The greenstuff on Harold Eastwood is a minor conversion to give him a waistcoat instead of a jumper. To be honest, I bought the miniature just because its a great sculpt, but to use him, I needed to make him look a little more Victorian. I suppose I could add a top hat. We'll see how it works when he's painted.

Just received my first order from the German Miniatures website Miniaturicum, including the figure set above, Chinatown Tong by Obelisk Miniatures, which will be perfect as minions of Dr Fu Manchu. Obelisk produce two more sets in the same series, Chinatown Civilians and Chinatown Merchants, which I will definitely be ordering now that I have seen these figures "in the flesh".

Not particularly related to the subject of this blog, but an original, yet strangely familiar line of miniature figures. You should check out this page. Sculptor Aaron Brown has produced a wide line of figures for this curious race, plus a full background. A rulebook is due for release. I haven't bought any yet, but I am constantly tempted. Perhaps as an alien or undiscovered lost world race for the Extraordinary Gentlemen to encounter?

Her Majesty's Special Agents

My first version of the League. Almost finished: I need to do a bit of highlighting, and the bases, obviously. Hyde and The Invisible Man are Heroclix repaints, Mina Harker and Quartermain are Wargames Foundry, from their Darkest Africa range, and Nemo is also a Foundry figure, with a greenstuff beard and turban added.

Ironically, since I started these I have discovered Ironclad Miniatures who do a superb range of Victorian Science Fiction character miniatures (as well as some rather nice VSF tanks), which will eventually include all of the characters from the League, plus Sherlock Holmes, Dr Watson, Agents L and H (Laurel and Hardy, the Men In Black), and John Carter, Warlord of Mars.

The Ironclad Miniatures really are great, and I already have Mina, Quartermain and John Carter, so I will be doing a second set once all the characters are available.
I also have a variant on the Hyde pictured above, with a top hat and a different head, which I want to paint up.

THE MOOR THING

This little fella's face, in my opinion, bears such an uncanny resemblance to League writer Alan Moore, who also happens to have resurrected the character Swamp Thing, that I just had to include him in my own League. The miniature is a World of Warcraft plastic figure that I have repainted. I like him so much, that I have also included him in my Weird War II Allied special operations unit, Section 13.

This blog is intended to record my efforts to assemble my own little League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (& Ladies) in miniature (28mm high to be precise), plus assorted enemies, associates and bystanders. Mainly for my own satisfaction, but also for gaming.

I have really enjoyed the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen graphic novels by Messrs Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill, and the characters from those books will form the core of the miniatures I intend to convert and paint, but I intend to expand my League to include other characters that seem appropriate and take my fancy, such as Sherlock Holmes, Dr Watson and the like.

Inspiration includes the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen graphic novels, but also Scarlett Traces, Hellboy, BPRD, Atomic Robo, The Umbrella Academy, The Adventures of Luther Arkwright and Heart of Empire, and I'm looking forward to representing many of the characters from those books too.

Characters I definitely intend to include so far are:- Mina Harker, Alan Quartermain, Captain Nemo, Mr Hyde, The Invisible Man, John Carter: Warlord of Mars, Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson.
